Detox week two: Activated Charcoal

April 15th, 2007

Air – Le soleil est pres de moi

Week two is over, and to celebrate I went out drinking. Or more accurately, it was Matty P’s birthday. It was my chance to experiment.

I took some Activated Charcoal at regular intervals over the course of the night, I drank heavily but still in a much more subdued state to what the old me would have done. I followed my usual routine – get tanked until closing time, talk bullshit with the bar owners until they kick me out and then stumble home, have a glass of water and go to bed. Last night’s topic of discussion with the owners was that I should go freelance and corner the pub market for IT support and solutions. I’m glad that plenty of other people have faith that I could go freelance and get by, I’m personally unsure about it right now, but I digress.

Now, on nights where I drink until closing time, the water before bed helps, but if I hit closing time I’m pretty much guaranteed a morning of hating booze and declaring that I’ll never drink again. Today there’s not even the slightest feeling of wooziness, no headache, no sensitivity to light and sound, I only feel a little tired but that’s a pre-existing condition. And it was good to know that it doesnt seem to negatively affect your drunken state.

Activated Charcoal is typically the major ingredient of expensive anti-hangover pills, yet by itself is extremely cheap. It’s been used by society for centuries as an all round medicinal suppliment and detoxifier, even Plato was taking the stuff, and it’s pretty much harmless. So if you see those expensive anti-hangover pills (eg $20 for four), ignore them, go grab yourself a big bottle of Activated Charcoal (eg $13 for one hundred)

To be fair, this is subjective testing and more data will be required to make it a little more scientific, and so I’m floating the idea here and now of a series of “Boys Night In’s”, every couple of weeks we convene at one of the boys houses (round robin method), play poker, Wii, get wankered and talk bullshit, invariably ending up as a Boys Night Out – harrassing some pub until closing time, going to strip bars etc… It’ll be a prime chance to collect some more data on the success rate of Activated Charcoal

I of course will have to remain completely sober during the evening to ensure the highest levels of data accuracy… honest :) Apart from that, detox is going well, I’m drinking plenty of water and eating better and as a result I’m feeling a lot better both physically and mentally. And financially. Either my body is flushing out the years of abuse, or there’s a grand placebo effect, and I honestly don’t care either way.
