You’re so vain, you probably think this blog is about you…
What’s there to say? I’m a geek. I had a VIC-20 and an Amiga 500+ when I was growing up. I have an NT4 administrative background, but I like UNIX more, specifically BSD.
Okay, I’ll expand. I live in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. I’m in my 30’s, working as a Linux/UNIX systems administrator. I’m one quarter New Zealand Maori, one quarter Scottish and half Viking (via the Normandy French) – there’s plenty of warrior genetics there. But instead of tooting my own horn, I asked my friends and family to describe me in one word. Here are some results:
“hmmm, jerkface” – Tamati (my younger brother)
“nerdhole” – Karmen (my ex-flatmate)
“you only call me about this and money!” – Mum
For the curious: Rawiri is the New Zealand Maori version of David. And David means “beloved one”, go figure.
So why another blog in the fuckingblogoramablogosphere5000? Well, I originally intended this solely for friends and family to catch up on where I’m at, and as also a destressing method (I was working on a helldesk), but as it turns out other people wanted to know my opinions about crap, specifically the IT industry, so I now do that too. And other people started linking to me, clearly one monkey descendant at one keyboard was doing something right. That’s really all there is to it.
Politically I’m a filthy socialist, or specifically a social democrat. On the Political Compass I rate thusly, putting me in a neat triangle with Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and The Dalai Lama.
This is not me:
